The primary mission of the Great Barrington Fire Department is to protect the lives and property of the residents and visitors of the Town of Great Barrington from the adverse effects of fire, medical emergencies, or exposure to dangerous conditions created by man or nature.
The Great Barrington Fire Department protects a diverse area with a substantial downtown, densely populated neighborhoods, large mills, rural areas with little water supply, mountains, fields, rivers, and lakes. Each provides its own set of challenges which the department is prepared to meet with a full time chief and 40 dedicated call firefighters. Members are trained in all types of fire suppression, emergency medical care, motor vehicle extrication, and hazardous materials response. Firefighters also operate a rescue team trained in mountain, high angle, ice water, and confined space rescue. The department responds to approximately 600 incidents annually, utilizing four engines, a tower ladder, rescue pumper, heavy rescue, and brush truck housed in two stations.
Fire prevention is another important service provided. Substantial time in dedicated to code enforcement, reviewing plans, issuing permits, and performing inspections. Additionally, the Fire Department is proactive in fire safety education.
