Introduction
The goals of the Main Street Reconstruction Project are to reconstruct Main Street from St. James Place (Taconic Avenue) north to Cottage Street, a distance of about one-half mile. This project is necessary due to failing pavement, drainage and utility issues, concerns about traffic and pedestrian safety, and a general desire to enhance the entire streetscape for years to come. This project will involve the total replacement of the roadway and pavement, and will include improvements to the entire corridor, including sidewalks, curbs, traffic signals, crosswalks, trees and landscaping, benches, lighting, and bicycle and pedestrian-friendly design.
The Town has engaged a consultant team for the project, led by engineering firm Fuss & O’Neill with subconsultants Foresight Land Services, Walter Cudnohofsky Associates, Webster Ingersoll, and Lindgren & Sharples.
The public input and design portions of the project will take approximately one and one-half years beginning in September 2009 and through mid 2011. Construction would not begin until 2012. The State is providing the majority of construction funds through the Massachusetts Highway Department.
