Accountant/ Financial Services Coordinator

The Department is responsible for maintaining and administering a financial accounting and management information system that provides accurate, complete, and timely information pertaining to all financial activities of the Town of Great Barrington departments.

The Department is responsible for oversight of fiscal compliance with all local, state, and federal statutes, regulations, and other mandates, as well as adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and sound internal control procedures as prescribed by Generally Accepted Governmental Auditing Standards (GAGAS).

The Town Accountant is responsible for the reconciliation of books and accounts, approval and payment of bills, auditing of cash balances of all departments, and preparation of required financial reports for the Town and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  The Town Accountant monitors the budget and notifies Department Heads if expenditures exceed appropriations. 

The Town Accountant provides monthly written statements to the Town Manager, Department Heads, the Finance Committee, and the Selectboard that show appropriations, expenditures, and unexpended balances.  The Town Accountant accounts for the receipt and disbursement of all cash transactions.  The Town Accountant prepares the Town of Great Barrington’s annual financial report, which includes a balance sheet, budget analysis, cash flow statement, debt schedule, accounts receivable reconciliation, and other miscellaneous schedules.
