Position Purpose

The Wastewater Mechanic supports the Town of Great Barrington’s mission to provide essential public services that protect public health, preserve environmental quality, and sustain community well-being. This position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and supporting the reliable operation of mechanical, electrical, and process systems at the wastewater treatment plant and associated pumping stations.

By performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting equipment failures, and responding to operational and emergency needs, the Wastewater Mechanic helps ensure continuous, safe, and compliant wastewater treatment operations. The role requires a strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, teamwork, and accountability, and works collaboratively with plant operators and supervisory staff to uphold regulatory standards, safeguard natural resources, and deliver dependable services to residents, businesses, and visitors of the Town.

Supervision

Reports to: Superintendent Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)

Supervises: No direct supervisory responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts routine equipment inspections and repairs machinery, motors and physical operating systems in the wastewater plant and collection system pump stations as needed.
  • Lubricate equipment and check for equipment malfunction.
  • Replace packings in pumps and valves as necessary.
  • Service and replace bearings in motors and other equipment.
  • Install and start up new equipment.
  • Maintain plumbing and piping.
  • Be able to perform welding and cutting requirements.
  • Calibrate and repair meters and gauges when applicable (refer to manufacturer’s O&M manuals).
  • Set up and maintain a regular program of lubrication and replacement of critical parts (bearings, etc.).
  • Inspect and service mechanical and electrical control systems (timers, level controllers, etc.).
  • Assist with the operation of the sludge processing equipment.
  • Performance of yardwork and housekeeping tasks including such things as painting, glazing, etc. as required for the upkeep of the plant.
  • Operation of valves, pumps, engines and generators in accordance with the process control needs of the plant as determined by the Superintendent.
  • The mechanic may be called upon by the Superintendent to perform duties of the other plant personnel for which they are qualified during periods of illness, vacation, or days off.
  • Safely operate, control, and monitor machinery and equipment used in the wastewater treatment process, including pumps, valves, conveyors, screens, and mixers.
  • Maintain detailed records of equipment operations, process data, and incidents during shifts to ensure accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Strictly adhere to safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment for oneself and others.
  • Identify and address operational issues, taking appropriate actions independently or by notifying Treatment Plant Operator or supervisory personnel.
  • Collaborate with other plant personnel, including operators, and supervisors, to facilitate efficient communication and teamwork.
  • Respond to emergencies, such as equipment failures, power outages, or spills, to mitigate risks and minimize environmental impact.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of collection system technology through ongoing training and professional development.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification or license in wastewater treatment operations is a plus.
  • Commercial Driver License B minimum.
  • Hoisting License 2B
  • At least three years of related experience required.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and safety procedures.
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to repair and maintain mechanical equipment for treatment systems.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements 

  • Prolonged periods standing, kneeling and bending while working on and/or repairing equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50-75 pounds.
  • Physical dexterity to operate equipment and perform maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, potentially with exposure to hazardous materials.
