Boil Order Lifted for GB Fire District Water Customers

The Great Barrington Fire District announced today that the boil order for drinking water has been lifted by the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

The DEP notified the Fire District shortly after noontime that the boil order, imposed late Wednesday afternoon, can be lifted. The cancellation followed a repeat test of the Fire District's untreated "source water,"  which on Tuesday showed signs of the E.coli bacteria.

On Tuesday no bacteria were found in the Fire District's treated water. But DEP regulations nevertheless require a boil order if source water samples show signs of the E.coli bacteria.

Questions may be directed to the Great Barrington Fire District, (413) 528-0133; the cancellation order will be posted at the Great Barrington Fire District website, here.

The Fire District is the private water company serving approximately 1,700 customers in Great Barrington south of Housatonic. The Fire District draws its water from the Green River aquifer.
