The town’s new health inspector knows something about restaurant health inspections. That’s because he was a restaurant chef for more than 20 years.

Stephen Browning was most recently the executive chef at Prairie Whale, which he helped open in 2012. He has previously held positions as executive chef, sous chef and other culinary roles in the New York City and Brooklyn dining circuit.

Browning earned his associate’s degree in culinary arts from the Culinary Institute of America.

In his new job, Browning is responsible for conducting health inspections to ensure local businesses are in compliance with state and local sanitary codes. This inspection roster includes 130 food establishments, investigation of sanitary code complaints and nuisance complaints. He is also responsible for enforcing local board of health regulations, and health related bylaws.

“We are really excited to have Stephen join the Health Department," said Rebecca Jurczyk, health agent. "His friendly and diligent work ethic makes him a great fit for community inspections."

Browning added, "I am very excited to be able to work for the town's progressive Health Department. I am also very excited to have some life balance and normal work hours to spend time with my wife, family and friends. This is a great change."
