GB Names James Mead Interim Fire Chief

The town has named James Mead as interim fire chief, as Chief Charles Burger prepares to step down at the end of the month.

Mead has been a deputy fire chief in the department since May 2021.

Mead, a 28-year veteran of the fire department, will serve in the interim role during the search process involving Town Manager Mark Pruhenski and members of the Great Barrington Firefighters Association.

The association members will assist with reviewing candidates’ resumes and with the interview process, said Pruhenski, himself a former volunteer firefighter. Participating are Capt. Josh Seile, Firefighter Matthew Pevzner and a retired fire chief, Michael Fitzpatrick.

“Chief Burger has been a great asset to the town during his years as chief,” said Pruhenski. “We wish him well and are pleased that Mead will bring his experience and expertise to the interim role.”

Burger served in the role of chief for approximately 10 years.

"I am very pleased that the Great Barrington Fire Department will be in good hands with Jim Mead," said Burger.
