Sanitary Sewer Overflow Notifications

The Town of Great Barrington's Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) consists of the treatment plant, 6 pump stations and 31 miles of sewer lines in the collection system. The WWTP is managed by the Wastewater Division of the town's Department of Public Works.

MassDEP has recently issued new regulations, 314 CMR 16.00, requiring public notifications for specific discharges from the WWTP which impact a surface water. The regulations went into effect July 6, 2022.

The regulations apply to specific types of sanitary sewer overflows and partially treated wastewater from a treatment facility.  Although these types of discharges are rare, the Town has implemented a public notification system to comply with the regulations.

When a discharge or overflow occurs, the Town of Great Barrington will send out a public advisory notification. On business days, this website will be updated as notifications are issued. During weekends or holidays it will be updated on the next business day. Additional information will be posted on this page as required. The Town must also provide notification to the MassDEP.  All notifications made to MassDEP are available to the public within 24 hours on the MassDEP portal. Enter Great Barrington in the Permittee field and click "Search" for a list of events.

Anyone interested in being notified if an event occurs can sign up through Subscribe to E-Alerts.
